In a blog post titled “Thinking about plastic…,” the writer mpshawn2 provides many important details about the usefulness of plastic.
Plastic is commonly used as a tool to enclose useful things, such as, items that are bought from specialty stores or supermarkets. There is a great tragedy here though, usually the items that are contained inside plastic casings or containers are considered to be worth protecting for the customer whether it’s for health and safety concerns or to protect the product’s integrity. The tragedy is that once the item is purchased its plastic protector is reduced to nothing more than a useless after thought and directed to the rubbish bin. With luck it may even be recycled, but looking at the figures it has less than a 9% chance of becoming something else through recycling, a 16% chance of becoming fuel, or a whopping 73% likelihood of ending up in a land fill.
